The 'imperial boomerang' hits Columbia -- and we are all in danger

Hello everyone, and welcome back! It’s been a minute.

First! A little bit of housekeeping—You will see I changed the the name to just the Karen Attiah podcast! I love the the rallying cry A Luta continua— and will do a future episode on the history and meaning. But this gives me more freedom.

Secondly--- I’ve called this little space the Golden Hour.

For those in the know, the golden hour, in photography speak the brief time around sunrise or sunset where the light is perfect. But it’s temporary yeah? You have to get your shots in, capture those angles.

There’s also the medical term—the Golden Hour—which is when a trauma patient has a window of time to get to treatment before their injuries get worse. Before it’s too late.

So maybe this all speaks to the urgency of the moment we are in. The short time to capture something beautiful, to be present, in the moment.

Now— on to talking about my latest piece for Washington Post, the latest at Columbia University— my former academic home, and the threats to democracy that the Trump pressure on colleges represents. And also, that the model of what we do to others abroad, always comes to hit us back home.
