It’s the Sunday night before the first day of Resistance Summer School.
Gotta get my notebooks, pens, and highlighters ready!
Just three months ago, I announced that Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs cancelled my course, and that I would teach it anyway.
Columbia Canceled My Course on Race and Media. I'm Going to Teach It Anyway.
When I got the opportunity to teach at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) in the fall of 2023 for the spring 2024 semester, I was elated. My dream of teaching in a global environment had come true.
Now, nearly three months later, y’all helped me build out an entire Resistance Summer school. Like literally.
Thanks to community support, I have been able to onboard a solid team, rent out space at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in DC., and build out a nice, new website.
We have been able to enroll more than 500+ of you and have awarded more than 40 scholarships. I really believe this is a model for community learning and infrastructure in a moment when our formal institutions are collapsing under political pressure and supremacist politics.
And I believe we can have fun with it! Should I do a Resistance Summer School Supplies toolkit video? Preferred pens and notebooks?
I’m already working on the Resistance Summer School Class of 2025 Mixtape. Suggestions welcome!
Time for me to get back to lecture prep. Just wanted to say.. I’m so grateful to all of you.
